Phil Simmons, the head coach of Bangladesh, remains supportive of Jaker Ali, the T20I captain despite his recent struggles with form, stating there is no significant issue with his batting.
Jaker, batting at number four, contributed 32 runs to help secure a series win with one match to spare. He has not been at his usual performance level, failing to score in double digits in his last five appearances, attracting criticism, especially after the Asia Cup.
Simmons addressed concerns about Jaker’s recent performance, acknowledging that international batsmen sometimes go through rough patches. He remarked, “When you look around the world, international batsmen fail a couple of times. I don’t see any problem. He (Jaker) had a couple of bad games, and that’s normal with batsmen. Cricket is like that.”
Simmons appreciated the way his team managed to win tight matches lately.
He commented on the quality of the recent match, saying it was a significant improvement over the previous game. “The match was an excellent game all around. I think the wicket played better for longer today, so it turned out to be a better game,” he explained. He praised the middle-order batsmen for their contributions, stating that continuous improvement is what they strive for.
Reflecting on their ability to win tight matches, Simmons noted, “The benefit of winning such close games is the confidence it builds when approaching future close encounters.”
He acknowledged the pressure these close-result games bring, humorously mentioning, “It’s good that we are winning, but it’s stressful on our hearts!”
Nurul Hasan received praise from Simmons for his decisive unbeaten 31 off 21 balls, along with recognition for the other players’ effective handling of Afghanistan’s spin bowlers.
“We dealt well with their spin attack today. Their strength was managed effectively. Yesterday, our approach was not as good, but today we executed our plans well,” Simmons remarked.
He highlighted Nurul’s significant contribution from a challenging position and emphasized the responsibility that the team’s batsmen have embraced in recent times.
On bowling strategies, Simmons stressed the importance of maintaining accuracy given the conditions in Sharjah. “We need to ensure we bowl in the right areas, as straight wicket-to-wicket lines work effectively here,” he elaborated.
Simmons concluded by acknowledging the steady progress of their bowling attack. “Our bowling has been reliable for the past several weeks. This has been critical to our team’s recent success,” he stated, affirming their strategic approach.
