Kuldeep Yadav, working to make up for lost time in the current Asia Cup, spoke about his challenging stint in England where he didn’t play despite favorable conditions. He acknowledged clear communication from head coach Gautam Gambhir regarding the team’s need for more batting depth.

In Dubai before India’s Asia Cup match against Oman, Kuldeep shared, “There were 3-4 games where I felt I could play, but unfortunately, I wasn’t selected because the focus was on batting depth. The communication was very clear and important.”

“Gautam Gambhir was straightforward. Sometimes I felt ready to play, but due to the emphasis on batting depth, I didn’t get the chance. It wasn’t about my skills, but rather the conditions or team combination,” he added.

Reflecting on his absence from cricket between India’s Champions Trophy win and the Asia Cup, Kuldeep discussed the challenges of not playing regularly. He used his time on the sidelines to focus on improving his cricket skills and fitness.

“It’s challenging because when you return to the field after a break, rhythm is crucial. Regular games help maintain rhythm and field awareness,” Kuldeep explained.

“During that time, I focused on self-improvement, enhancing fitness, and increasing bowling volume, which was vital. You learn significantly when you’re not playing and can observe the team from an outside perspective,” he continued.

Afterwards, he played in the Duleep Trophy, where despite not taking wickets, he found his rhythm. “Blaming others is easy; improving oneself is tough. It’s crucial to recognize weaknesses and work on them to become a better player,” Kuldeep advised.

Though often omitted due to India’s need for batting depth, Kuldeep emphasized his primary role as a bowler tasked with taking wickets.

“Bowling is my strength,” he stated. “As a team bowler, my job is to take wickets. Continuing to practice is essential to hone skills.”

Drawing inspiration from the strong bench strength in football teams observed in England, Kuldeep maintained motivation from watching other sports.

“Following other sports, especially big teams, shows how they perform and how players not getting much game time remain excellent. It offers insights into quick decision-making and team dynamics,” he noted.

“Observing team sports highlights the importance of communication and player connections, crucial aspects in any sport,” Kuldeep concluded.
