England’s versatile bowler and allrounder Chris Woakes has decided to retire from international cricket at 36. His last match was at The Oval against India. Even though he wasn’t picked for the Ashes series in Australia, Woakes plans to continue playing county cricket and explore possibilities in franchise leagues.
“It’s time for me to step away from international cricket,” Woakes stated. “Playing for England has been a dream since childhood. Wearing the Three Lions and playing alongside incredible teammates, some of whom have become lifelong friends, has been a privilege I will cherish forever.”
“Since my debut in Australia in 2011, the journey has been full of unforgettable moments. Winning two World Cups and experiencing some thrilling Ashes series are memories that I will carry with me always.”
“I owe everything to my family—my parents, my wife Amie, and our daughters Laila and Evie. Thank you for your endless support and sacrifices. To the fans, and especially the Barmy Army, your passion and belief have always driven me. A sincere thank you to my coaches, teammates, and the behind-the-scenes crews at both England and Warwickshire.”
“I remain excited about playing county cricket and exploring opportunities in franchise cricket.”
Woakes launched his international career in January 2011 during England’s tour of Australia, playing in both T20Is and ODIs. He made his Test debut two years later at The Oval, stepping in for the injured Tim Bresnan.
In his 62 Test matches, Woakes claimed 192 wickets, including stunning performances like 11 for 102 against Pakistan at Lord’s. He also scored one Test century and seven half-centuries.
In ODIs, Woakes made 122 appearances, capturing 173 wickets, with his best figures being 6 for 45 against Australia in Brisbane. His T20I career saw him playing 33 matches and claiming 31 wickets. Woakes was pivotal to England’s white-ball resurgence, participating in their 2015 transformation, and celebrating victories in the 2019 ODI World Cup and the 2022 T20 World Cup.
Woakes’ last Test was against India at The Oval, where he suffered a shoulder dislocation but continued to bat on the final day, demonstrating his determination. Although he worked hard on recuperating for the Ashes, he was not included in the final squad. Rob Key, England men’s managing director, later indicated that Woakes would not be part of their future plans.
