The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has chosen to honor the memory of Zubeen Garg, the esteemed Assamese singer and cultural figure, who passed away in a scuba diving accident in Singapore recently. A memorial event will be organized during the inauguration ceremony of the Women’s World Cup on September 30 in Guwahati.
“There is profound grief and a sorrowful atmosphere in Assam following Zubeen’s passing. In alignment with the prevailing emotions, and recognizing his deserving respect, the Assam Cricket Association and BCCI have planned a tribute program during the opening ceremony. This is our way of paying homage to Zubeen,” BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia stated on Sunday.
The opening match will feature co-hosts India and Sri Lanka. “A 40-minute tribute in Zubeen’s memory is planned, possibly the most significant honor the cricketing community can extend to him,” Saikia mentioned. Apart from the tribute to Garg, Shreya Ghoshal will perform a selection of Bollywood hits and the tournament’s official song, “Bring it Home.”
Saikia expressed hope that the Indian team would overcome their World Cup challenges this time. They were close to prevailing against favorites Australia in the recently concluded three-match ODI series, although it concluded with a 1-2 loss.
“The series against Australia was highly competitive, ending in a 2-1 victory for them. However, India performed commendably. Australia is an exceptional team, but India is advancing rapidly. Up to now, India has not secured any ICC women’s trophy, making this a vital opportunity for them to excel,” Saikia added.
“With matches being hosted in both India and Sri Lanka, there is widespread support for the Indian team. Their recent success in England is a notable accomplishment. Indian women’s cricket has truly evolved, and I am confident they will deliver an outstanding performance in the upcoming World Cup. I hope this time the jinx will be broken,” stated Saikia.
