The Pakistan-UAE match day had a similar plot to the previous day, where Pakistan canceled their press conference amid uncertainty. The toss was slated for 6:00 pm local time, yet the team remained in their hotel until about 5:30 pm.
Cricbuzz reports that the Pakistan players were prepared to leave, with kit bags packed and ready, but were told to hold until further notice. Fans gathered outside the hotel gates to see them off, but there was no movement, leading to doubts about whether the game would occur.
Almost simultaneously, news of a Lahore press conference surfaced, which didn’t happen. Instead, the Pakistan team finally departed the hotel around 5:45 pm, shortly after PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi tweeted that they were directed to proceed to the Dubai International Stadium. Consequently, the match was delayed by an hour.
Pakistan’s 15-kilometer journey took nearly 40 minutes, delayed by evening traffic and last-minute security for the team bus. Meanwhile, the UAE team arrived at the stadium around 5:00 pm local time.
Andy Pycroft, present at the stadium by 5:00 pm local time, reportedly left during the standoff but later officiated Pakistan vs. UAE. Subsequently, the PCB shared a silent video and press note stating Pycroft had apologized for the September 14 handshake controversy, which he attributed to “miscommunication.”
During a meeting at Dubai International Stadium, Pycroft met with Pakistan’s captain Salman Ali Agha, coach Mike Hesson, and team manager Naveed Cheema, who had protested India’s handshake refusal following their Asia Cup match.
“ICC’s controversial match referee Andy Pycroft has apologized to the Pakistani cricket team’s manager and captain,” the board stated in a media release.
“Andy Pycroft had prohibited the team captains from shaking hands during the India-Pakistan match, prompting a strong response from the Pakistan Cricket Board.”
“Pycroft described the September 14 incident as a miscommunication and apologized. The ICC is open to investigating the Code of Conduct violation from that match.”
