Breaking Down the WPL 2026: Which Teams Will Secure a Spot in the Knockouts?

Predicting the Playoff Contenders in the 2026 WPL Showdown

As we approach the conclusion of an intense league stage in the fourth edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL), the competition for the knockout stage remains fiercely contested.

The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have secured their place after clinching their first five matches, but the battle for the remaining two playoff spots is still on, with four teams in the running.

Despite the 2024 WPL winner having a chance to get directly to the final, they were thwarted by the Delhi Capitals in their last match. With two more group games left, RCB still has a shot at claiming a direct path to the final.

Here’s what the other four contenders need to do to advance to the knockouts:

Delhi Capitals

Currently sitting second on the points table with six points from as many games, the three-time runners-up, Delhi Capitals, have overcome a slow start. Winning their remaining matches will secure them a top-two finish, regardless of other outcomes or Net Run Rate (NRR) scenarios.

If they lose one of their next two games, NRR becomes crucial. In such a case, DC must avoid heavy defeats and hope that GG and MI’s NRRs remain stable.

Next fixtures: vs Gujarat Giants (January 27), vs UP Warriorz (February 1)

Gujarat Giants

Level on points with DC but trailing in NRR, Gujarat Giants are in third place. Securing wins in their remaining games will guarantee their progression to the Playoffs.

A defeat to DC would necessitate favorable outcomes from other matches and an improved NRR, especially since their upcoming opponents have superior numbers in that respect.

Next fixtures: vs Delhi Capitals (January 27), vs Mumbai Indians (January 30)

Mumbai Indians

Currently in a tight playoff race following an unusual string of three losses, defending champions Mumbai Indians benefit from having a better NRR than the two teams above them.

Victories in their last two encounters should suffice for MI’s advancement, as only DC and GG can potentially achieve more than eight points. If they drop one of the matches, their fate will depend on the results of other games.

Next fixtures: vs Royal Challengers Bengaluru (January 26), vs Gujarat Giants (January 30)

UP Warriorz

At the bottom of the standings, UP Warriorz face the added challenge of having the worst NRR. With the possibility of multiple teams finishing with equal points, NRR will be crucial for their qualification.

Even with wins in both fixtures, UPW will need favorable outcomes in other matches. A single loss would make it nearly impossible to progress, with the Warriorz needing to focus on improving their NRR as a priority.

Next fixtures: Royal Challengers Bengaluru (January 29), Delhi Capitals (February 1)
