Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav remarked that his team chose not to shake hands with Pakistan after their win in the Asia Cup match in Dubai as a form of response. Pakistan’s coach Mike Hesson later expressed that the Pakistani players were prepared to shake hands and felt disheartened when the gesture was not reciprocated.

There were unusual scenes at the end of the T20I between the two sides. Suryakumar executed a six to seal the game, approached batting partner Shivam Dube for a handshake, and walked off without acknowledging the Pakistani players.

A similar situation emerged during the toss, where Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav and Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha did not partake in a handshake.

“Our government and BCCI collaborated on this decision. We came only to play the game, and I feel we offered the correct response,” stated Suryakumar during the post-match press conference.

Further, Suryakumar expanded on the matter: “Some things in life are more important than sportsmanship,” he stated.

“During the presentation, I emphasized standing with the victims of the Pahalgam terror attack and expressing solidarity with their families. We dedicate this win to our brave armed forces involved in Operation Sindoor. Their inspiration drives us, and we aim to reciprocate that inspiration if given the opportunity.”

Hesson noted that the absence of Salman Ali Agha from the post-match ceremony was a consequence of India’s stance.

“There was an expectation to engage and shake hands post-match, which didn’t occur, and that was the conclusion of it,” Hesson commented.

“We were ready to shake hands post-game, and it was disappointing when it didn’t happen. As they headed to the changing room, we were left disheartened. Despite being dissatisfied with our performance, we were open to extending the handshake.”

On the field, India’s dominance over Pakistan was attributed to the team’s disregard of the social media noise surrounding the match, according to Suryakumar.

Suryakumar articulated, “Regarding social media, our team and support staff decided on day one to ignore 75-80% of external noise.”

“By doing so, we can execute plans effectively on the ground. I’m unaware of the external happenings as my team keeps me insulated. This approach helps us maintain focus and perform with clarity, bolstered by the supportive crowd.”
