Bangladesh head coach Phil Simmons asserted on Tuesday that any team has the capability to overcome India as they gear up to face the tournament’s frontrunners in the Super Four stage of the ongoing Asia Cup T20.
While India remains unbeaten in the tournament, Bangladesh seems to be gaining momentum at just the right moment, following a decisive six-wicket triumph over Sri Lanka. The team aims to maintain this momentum in their pivotal match.
“Every team has the capability to defeat India. The game is decided on the day-it’s not about India’s past performances, but what occurs during that three-and-a-half-hour period on Wednesday,” Simmons explained.
“We aim to perform our best cricket and attempt to capitalize on any mistakes India might make. That’s our key to winning games,” he added.
Embracing the Occasion
Simmons recognized the inevitable excitement surrounding matches featuring India, the world’s top-ranked T20 team.
“Every game is surrounded by hype, especially those involving India, given their status as the number one T20 team worldwide. We’re set to ride that wave, enjoy the moment, and relish the game. Our approach is to enjoy ourselves, which in turn helps us deliver our best performance.”
The usually composed coach, who has displayed a calm demeanor throughout the tournament, stressed the importance of keeping his players grounded.
“I strive to manage my emotions as much as possible. We’re not here just to defeat Sri Lanka-we’re here to win the tournament. Until we’re either knocked out or have claimed victory, I need to keep my emotions in check and ensure the team remains focused,” Simmons stated.
Pitch Conditions and Scheduling Challenges
Discussing the Dubai venue, Simmons believes the toss will have minimal impact on the match outcome due to the excellent pitch quality.
“I didn’t observe much change in the wicket over 40 overs. These are some of the finest pitches I’ve encountered here in quite a while,” he noted. “The surface was superb for batting, requiring bowlers to execute their skills effectively. I don’t think the toss holds much significance.”
However, Simmons raised concerns over the demanding schedule, with Bangladesh set to play India and Pakistan on consecutive days (September 24 and 25).
“Playing back-to-back T20 matches, or ODIs for that matter, is extremely demanding. It’s not ideal, but we’ve prepared thoroughly and trained diligently. I believe our players possess the fitness to manage consecutive games. Nonetheless, it’s unreasonable to expect any team to play back-to-back T20s. It’s far tougher than people realize,” he concluded.
