Australia’s Head Envisions Ashes Rivals Toasting Friendship in Sydney Finale
Travis Head, Australia’s opening batter, is eager for Australia and England to come together for drinks after the Ashes series concludes in Sydney, hoping to revive a tradition that lapsed following the 2023 series. Typically, players and staff from both teams gather for post-series drinks, but in 2023, extended farewells for several England players and staff prevented this from happening at The Oval after the fifth Test.
Head expressed his anticipation about the possibility of post-series drinks at the Sydney Cricket Ground, noting that both teams have conducted themselves admirably. “There’s definitely mutual respect,” he shared with The Australian newspaper. He added that he has developed good rapport with some of the English players and looks forward to sharing a beer, specifically mentioning Ben Duckett.
Australia currently leads the five-Test series 3-1, securing the urn after their win in the third Test in Adelaide. In the 2023 series, tensions flared due to a “spirit of cricket” incident when Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey controversially ran out Jonny Bairstow, souring relations between the teams. Australian players faced abuse from England fans at Lord’s, and England’s head coach, Brendon McCullum, initially indicated that sharing post-match drinks was unlikely.
However, McCullum reconsidered after England won the final Test at The Oval by 49 runs, drawing the series 2-2, and stated that England would share a beer with Australia. This meeting never materialized, leading to criticism from some Australian media. England captain Ben Stokes later clarified on social media that there was no intent to snub Australia, explaining that farewells at The Oval took longer than planned.
The fifth Test is set to begin in Sydney on January 4.
