Australia Dominates: Gardner’s Century and Sutherland’s All-Round Brilliance Seal Unbeaten Streak

Gardner and Sutherland Shine as Australia Extends Winning Legacy

In a star-studded Australian team, Ashleigh Gardner and Annabel Sutherland shone brightly at the Holkar Stadium on Wednesday. Competing in a round-robin match against England in the Women’s ODI World Cup 2025, the duo excelled with both bat and ball, guiding the defending champions to a six-wicket victory. Gardner delivered an impressive unbeaten 104 off 73 balls and claimed two wickets, while Sutherland’s efforts included an unbeaten 98 along with capturing three wickets.

Their unbroken 180-run partnership played a crucial role in propelling the Australian team, leading them to chase down a target of 245 in only 40.3 overs, despite a challenging start of 24 for three. This performance, delivered without the leadership of injured captain Alyssa Healy, sends a strong warning to their competitors in the tournament. With this win, Australia reclaimed the top position in the standings, accumulating 11 points from six matches, while England experienced their first defeat of the tournament and their eighth consecutive loss to Australia.

Coming together at 68 for four in the 16th over, Sutherland and Gardner remained unfazed by the earlier fall of wickets. They played with elegance, using cuts, drives, and sweeps to keep the English bowlers at bay during their time at the crease.

In England’s innings of 244 for nine, Tammy Beaumont (78 off 105 balls, including 10 fours and a six) was the standout performer. Sutherland and Alana King (10-1-20-1) emerged as the leading bowlers for Australia. After a brisk opening stand of 55 runs between Beaumont and Amy Jones, Sutherland halted England’s progress. In the ninth over, after five consecutive dot balls, she bowled Jones with a delivery that angled in from wide of the crease before deviating to hit the off-stump.

Beaumont, who reached 52 in 59 balls by cutting Kim Garth through point for a boundary, added only 26 more runs off her subsequent 46 deliveries. A vital 61-run partnership between Alice Capsey and Charlie Dean for the seventh wicket helped England reach their final total.
