Australia and West Indies Triumph in ICC Under 19 World Cup 2026 Super Six Clashes
Australia maintained its leading position in Group 1 with a decisive six-wicket victory over South Africa, while the West Indies secured a win against Ireland to keep their semifinal hopes alive in the Super Six stage of the ICC Under-19 World Cup 2026 on Sunday.
After being asked to bat by Australia, South Africa found themselves struggling at 37 for four within 10 overs, as Charles Lachmund and William Byrom claimed two wickets each. Despite wickets falling regularly, Paul James managed a lone fightback with a score of 34 off 60 deliveries. South Africa was eventually dismissed for 118 in less than 33 overs, with Lachmund ending with three wickets and Byrom and Aryan Sharma taking two each.
In Australia’s chase, they found themselves in a precarious position at 45 for two in the 12th over after losing key players Will Malajczuk and Nitesh Samuel. Steven Hogan and Oliver Peake provided stability with a 22-run partnership before Jacob Basson dismissed Peake for his second wicket. Hogan drove Australia closer to the target but was eventually out for 43, leaving Australia needing 25 more runs to win. Jayden Draper and Alex Young successfully finished the chase, securing a maiden Super Six victory for the defending champions. Australia now leads Group 1 with six points.
The West Indies had a shaky start at 67 for three within the first 16 overs after Ireland opted to field first. Jewel Andrew led the recovery with an 82-ball 66, aiding the innings’ momentum. Contributions from Jonathan van Lange with 28 and Aadian Racha with another 28 helped West Indies surpass the 200-run threshold, finishing at 226 in 46.5 overs.
Ireland’s chase began strongly with James West scoring a brisk 55-ball 45. However, Freddie Ogilby (14), Adam Leckey (18), and Rob O’brien (26) were unable to build on their starts, allowing West Indies to fight back. Leg-spinner Micah McKenzie was instrumental in dismantling the Irish middle order, ending with remarkable figures of 4/36 in 10 overs. Ireland found themselves at 164 for seven in 40 overs, needing 62 runs from 60 balls when rain halted play. With no further play possible, West Indies claimed victory by 25 runs using the D/L method. This win places West Indies third in Group 1 with four points.
