Aussie Hosts, Kohli’s Growth: How Tough Love Shaped a Cricket Icon
Renowned batsman Virat Kohli has confessed that the fierce atmosphere of Australian cricket tested his resilience. He believes standing up to this environment while playing daring cricket not only strengthened his mind but also significantly influenced his career trajectory and personal growth.
Kohli embarked on his first tour of Australia in 2011, facing a hostile audience. However, he noticed that the initial aggression eventually evolved into respect.
“As a child watching cricket, especially Test matches in Australia, I would wake up early to see the ball darting about and the confrontational opposition. I used to think, ‘If I can perform well in these conditions against such opponents, I’d be proud of my achievement as a cricketer.’ This drove me to watch the greats, like Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, and Virender Sehwag, who I deeply admired,” Kohli shared with Fox Cricket prior to the first ODI in Perth on Sunday.

“Watching the Australian setup—always in your face, taking the game head-on—was inspiring. Initially, it seemed easier to watch on TV than to be part of that hostile setting, but those experiences were invaluable to my development as a cricketer and individual.”
“Such moments really challenge your mental fortitude and resilience because you can’t shy away after facing criticism from the crowd; you have to return each day,” added Kohli, who recently made a comeback after more than seven months and got out for a duck.
Kohli also recalled insightful conversations with former England captain Kevin Pietersen, with whom he played at Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) during the Indian Premier League (IPL), which helped him acclimate to the Australian style of cricket.
“Initially, I didn’t quite understand it,” Kohli admitted. “But people like Kevin Pietersen, who’ve faced similar situations, explained that though it feels like Australians are constantly on your back, they deeply respect your courage to stand up and compete. Don’t take it to heart; just play competitive cricket. Over time, you learn how it shapes you mentally as a player. I’m grateful for those experiences, as the intense crowd interactions brought out the best in me.”

Kohli emphasized that the challenging conditions left him with no option but to give his all. “I had to give my 120 percent. There was no way I was going to underperform in this country, under such adversities. On and off the field, Australians have shown immense respect, and away from competition, they have been genuinely warm and friendly. I have truly enjoyed my time here in Australia.”
Having retired from T20I and Test cricket, Kohli, who now only participates in ODIs, noted that Australia remains a cherished destination for him. “Returning to Australia is always a pleasure, a place where I’ve had rich cricketing experiences. Hard-fought cricket, numerous battles—what I’ve learned is playing competitively earns you respect over time. That’s the essence of playing here.”
“Perth holds fond memories for me. It’s a wonderful place, relaxed, with fantastic wickets offering pace and bounce, which I always relish,” he concluded.
