Arshdeep Unveils Winning Strategies for Mastering Flat Wickets
The evolution of T20 cricket has reached new heights with more daring batsmen and flatter pitches pushing the boundaries of run-scoring. The series opener between India and New Zealand at the VCA Stadium showcased this trend, with an astounding total of 428 runs scored.
Fast bowler Arshdeep Singh finds that maintaining relevance in such high-scoring games requires a mix of preparation and a touch of faith.
“I start by invoking divine help: ‘The pitch looks flat… please protect me,’” he joked following India’s 48-run victory on Wednesday.
“All the strategy is laid out in meetings and practice sessions. When it’s game time, my aim is to execute those plans.”
Delivering an impressive bowling spell (4-0-31-1) amidst the high scores, the left-arm pacer noted that his form doesn’t depend on playing every match.
“There are advantages to being in and out of the team. Just like my team inclusion varies, the ball swings in and out really well,” he humorously noted.
The strategic decision for Hardik Pandya to partner with him for the new ball, while Jasprit Bumrah was held back, highlighted India’s tactical versatility.
“The team’s needs dictate the order of batsmen, bowlers, and even field placements. We must be ready to adapt in these areas. That is our core principle,” Arshdeep explained.

On the other side, New Zealand’s Glenn Phillips viewed their prolonged stay in India with mixed feelings.
“It’s a bit of a double-edged sword. We have been here for nearly two weeks and it will be one-and-a-half months by the World Cup’s end.
“While we gain more insights than many teams, we’ve also been away longer than most,” Phillips commented.
