Mamatha Madiwala Shines in India A Debut, Gaining Insights from International Stars vs New Zealand

Emerging Talent Mamatha Madiwala Impresses in India A Debut Against New Zealand

In a thrilling ICC Women’s ODI World Cup warm-up match at the BCCI Centre of Excellence ground 2 in Bengaluru, Shafali Verma’s impressive innings of 70 runs from 49 balls, embellished with 11 fours and a six, laid the groundwork for India A’s four-wicket victory over New Zealand via the DLS method. Yet, it was Mamatha Madiwala who truly shone, steering the team to triumph with an unbeaten 56 off 60 balls, including 6 fours and a six.

Reflecting on the match, Mamatha shared her experience with Sportstar, highlighting the challenge of facing international players like Sophie Devine and Amelia Kerr. She credited the constant communication with her teammate Minnu Mani for guiding their strategy, as well as Shafali Verma’s encouragement, which instilled confidence to play her natural game. Together with skipper Minnu Mani, Mamatha frustrated the White Ferns with a robust, undefeated 105-run partnership.

Having been part of the Indian squad for the Women’s Emerging Team Asia Cup in 2023 in Hong Kong, Mamatha’s standout performance for India A on her debut places her as a strong contender for the senior national team. “After a solid performance against New Zealand, I feel more confident in myself,” the 22-year-old expressed. “I am ready, mentally and physically, for any opportunity to play for India.”

Mamatha recounted the joy of hitting the winning shot, appreciating the support and recognition from her teammates as they celebrated her as a rising star. Among the challenges she faced in the game, Bree Illing emerged as formidable opposition with her rapid deliveries, yet Mamatha adapted quickly, even hitting a six nearly 70 meters.

Beyond the victory, Mamatha cherished observing and learning from some of the world’s best cricketers. She admired their power, intent, and positivity, along with their savvy on-field communications.

Her journey is deeply rooted in her family’s sacrifices; her father Veeresh moved from a stable hardware job in Kalaburagi, Karnataka to Hyderabad, taking on various odd jobs, alongside her mother, to support Mamatha’s cricketing dreams. She also expressed gratitude towards V. Chamundeswaranath, former Andhra Cricket Association secretary, for his unwavering support, both financially and motivationally. His encouragement, including gifting her new gear, played a pivotal role in her success on the field.
