ICC Immediately Suspends USA Cricket for Breaching Member Obligations

USA Cricket Faces Immediate ICC Suspension Over Membership Violations

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced the immediate suspension of USA Cricket due to violations of ICC Member obligations as outlined in the ICC Constitution. This decision was made public on Tuesday.

“After a comprehensive review and significant engagement with essential stakeholders over the past year, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has confirmed the immediate suspension of USA Cricket’s ICC membership status,” the ICC stated in their release.

The ICC Board determined this action during its recent meeting, citing USA Cricket’s persistent violations of its Member obligations under the ICC Constitution.

The global governing body highlighted several issues, including the failure to establish a functional governance structure, inadequate progress towards National Governing Body recognition by the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC), and actions that have damaged cricket’s reputation both in the United States and internationally.

This significant move by the ICC comes shortly after USAC terminated its 50-year commercial agreement with American Cricket Enterprises (ACE), once regarded as vital for the sport’s growth in the U.S. Established in 2019, the deal granted ACE control over elite T20 cricket in exchange for funding national teams, creating six stadiums, and starting leagues.

This partnership achieved milestones like co-hosting the 2024 T20 World Cup and earning the ICC’s Associate Team of the Year award. However, issues arose this summer as USAC accused ACE of unpaid dues, unfulfilled infrastructure commitments, and governance interference, while ACE countered by accusing USAC of misrepresenting the agreement.

The suspension follows an ICC ultimatum issued in July, which required USAC to conduct “free and fair” elections and implement governance reforms within three months.

Despite the suspension, USA’s national teams retain their eligibility to participate in ICC events, including preparations for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games (LA28).

The ICC will temporarily manage the teams’ administration to ensure player support and continuation towards Olympic inclusion. A Normalisation Committee, supported by ICC management, will outline specific conditions for USA Cricket’s membership reinstatement, including governance and operational reforms. The committee will also monitor progress and provide advisory support.
