Quinton de Kock is back on the international circuit for South Africa after a hiatus. His last appearance was in June 2024, and now he has been included in the squads for seven white-ball matches in Namibia and Pakistan, scheduled from October 11 to November 8.

De Kock had famously retired from Test cricket in December 2021, following the first match in a home series against India. His exit from ODIs was less dramatic, occurring after South Africa’s World Cup semifinal against Australia in November 2023. June 2024 marked his last international T20 appearance in a game he did not officially retire from.

Post-international career, De Kock has divided his time between family, recreational fishing, and participating in franchise tournaments around the world. He has played 58 franchise games for teams including the Seattle Orcas, Barbados Royals, Durban’s Super Giants, Kolkata Knight Riders, and Mumbai Indians New York.

Despite his absence from international play, questions about De Kock’s future with South Africa lingered. In September of the previous year, then-white-ball coach and sole selector Rob Walter announced there hadn’t been discussions concerning De Kock’s return to the national team, although the option was open.

The conversation about De Kock’s return eventually took place during South Africa’s white-ball tour of Australia. New coach Shukri Conrad was contacted by De Kock, who expressed a desire to play for the national team again, citing his wish to contribute meaningfully and his fondness for representing South Africa.

De Kock’s potential return is seen as beneficial due to his exceptional talent and experience. His involvement promises to be an asset for the team, particularly with upcoming tournaments like the T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka and India in February and March.

Conrad emphasized that while there are no guarantees regarding World Cup selection, De Kock’s performance could earn him a spot on the squad. South Africa’s selection committee, including Patrick Moroney and Enoch Nkwe, would decide the lineup based on merit.

As an accomplished player, ranking just behind Faf du Plessis and Temba Bavuma in terms of active Test run-scorers, De Kock’s presence is hoped to enhance team performance. Although South Africa has had varied success in his absence, his potential contribution could improve their white-ball success rate.

De Kock’s international relevance is being reassessed, particularly in light of his shrinking IPL salary over recent years and the increasing value of newer players like Dewald Brevis in the league marketplace. This dynamic might indicate that active international status is crucial for retaining a high market value in T20 leagues.

While some might argue that players should compete in domestic matches to be eligible for international play, De Kock’s return is seen as an exception, considering his impact on South African cricket.
