Bangladesh advanced to the Super 4s stage after Sri Lanka’s victory over Afghanistan. With the win, Sri Lanka also secured a spot in the Super 4s.
Sri Lanka had defeated Bangladesh by six wickets in their group match, but Bangladesh’s bowling coach Shaun Tait considers that history.
“Today is a new day. The beauty of these tournaments is the quick succession of games, allowing us to move past previous matches,” Tait stated on Friday.
“The focus is on our game plan, and I’m sure Sri Lanka shares that mindset as we are quite familiar with each other. It’s a great competition. Reaching the final four shows our determination. We’ll regroup tonight for a significant match tomorrow,” added Tait.
“I watched the end of the SL vs. AFG game at the hotel, checking scores before dinner. The game was tense with back-and-forth plays that kept us guessing,” Tait remarked.
Tait is not overly worried about the schedule, with Bangladesh set to face India and Pakistan back-to-back on September 24 and 25.
“Such is the nature of the schedule. It’s about training, playing, and using modern recovery tactics efficiently. Personally, I don’t get caught up in the schedule complexities. It’s international cricket, after all. We continue as planned, aiming to play our best,” mentioned Tait.
Tait expressed hope that Mustafizur Rahman will shine on crucial days and noted that he enjoys working with him as he requires minimal guidance.
“I trust Mustafizur to deliver since he has ample experience here. He doesn’t need much input from me regarding his bowling,” said Tait.
“If ‘the Fizz’ is in a satisfactory environment, his performance speaks for itself. My role is to ensure his happiness and confidence, while he manages the rest. There’s not much new I can teach him, yet I relish his company and value his contribution to the team,” Tait added.
On the other hand, Sri Lankan batting coach Thillina Kandamby remarked that they are mindful of their opponents’ strengths, and are preparing for the spin challenge, noting Dubai’s propensity to favor slower bowlers.
“From Zimbabwe onwards, our preparations have been steady before the Asia Cup. We’ve focused on taking things one step at a time, keeping our approach straightforward. This mindset has fueled our success,” said Kandamby.
“In the past months, we’ve played several matches, gaining insights into our opponents’ strengths and weaknesses. Our team is prepared to put up a strong fight,” he stated.
“Afghanistan boasts an exceptional spin attack. We managed this carefully, avoiding risks against Rashid. Although conditions favor batters, we adapted well. As we head to Dubai, where spin is more advantageous, our team has discussed strategies and is ready,” Kandamby concluded.
