Oman captain Jatinder Singh has urged India to assist his team in closing the gap between Test nations and Associate countries.
In their Asia Cup match against India in Abu Dhabi, Oman demonstrated competitiveness despite a defeat. Playing against India for the first time across formats, they challenged the world’s top-ranked T20I team until the end, ultimately losing by 21 runs.
“If India could support us by offering their facilities, allowing us to train there, and providing opportunities at NCAs, it would be beneficial,” Jatinder remarked. “Training on skills, mental aspects, fitness, and playing multiple T20s with club and Ranji teams would help bridge the gap.”
While Oman has previously participated in the World Cup, this marked their inaugural appearance in the Asia Cup, a tournament with a rich history since the 1980s.
“As an Associate nation, we rarely face Test-playing countries,” Jatinder stated. “We are grateful for this platform and proud of our players for showing such character under the circumstances.”
“Frequent tournaments like these would allow more Associates to compete alongside Test nations, helping close the existing gap,” he added.
“Oman’s players have the potential but lack the opportunities in franchise cricket. With such platforms, they can gain valuable experience to bring back and share in Oman.”
Jatinder reflected on their final Asia Cup match, expressing optimism for the upcoming T20 World Cup qualifiers at home.
“In T20 cricket, any outcome is possible, and our team had a plan. Overall, I’m thrilled with our performance, especially in bowling, fielding, and batting. Our partnerships showed resilience,” he said.
“I’m proud of this unit. With the T20 World Cup qualifiers coming to Oman, we’re ready to shine,” Jatinder concluded.
