India U19 Triumphs with Abhigyan and Vedant’s Heroics in First Youth ODI Against Australia
Teen sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi displayed his exceptional batting skills as wicketkeeper Abhigyan Kundu and Vedant Trivedi’s unbeaten half-centuries led India U-19 to a decisive seven-wicket victory over Australia U-19 in the first Youth ODI on Sunday.
Australia managed to score only 225 for nine after opting to bat first, due to an outstanding performance by the Indian bowlers.
India then chased down the target with 117 balls remaining at the Ian Healy Oval, thanks to the not-out knocks of 87 and 61 by Kundu and Trivedi, respectively.
All eyes were on the 14-year-old Suryavanshi, who responded brilliantly with a quickfire 38 off just 22 balls, hitting seven fours.
Suryavanshi’s dominance was evident as captain Ayush Mhatre contributed only six runs in a 50-run opening partnership, before being dismissed by pacer Hayden Schiller.
Two balls later, Charles Lachmund dismissed Mhatre, leaving India with two quick losses at the same score.
One-down batter Vihaan Malhotra couldn’t contribute significantly either, as Lachmund struck again, reducing India to 75 for three in the 10th over, offering Australia a glimmer of hope.
However, Trivedi and Kundu combined forces for an unbroken 152-run stand for the fourth wicket, completing the chase in just 30.3 overs.
Kundu hammered five sixes and eight fours in his 74-ball innings, while Trivedi hit eight boundaries in his 69-ball stay.
Australia U-19’s most successful bowler was seamer Lachmund, who claimed 2/46 in 7 overs.
Earlier, Indian bowlers maintained a disciplined line and length, restricting Australia to below 230, which was less than the home team had aimed for after electing to bat first.
The Australians wouldn’t have reached that score without John James’ counterattacking unbeaten 77 off 68 balls, after they struggled at 35 for four and then 107 for six.
Henil Patel (3/38 in 10 overs), Kanishk Chouhan (2/39 in 10), and Kishan Kumar (2/59 in 10) shared the majority of the wickets, with RS Ambrish taking one (1/50 in 10).
Tom Hogan contributed a slow 41 off 81 balls, while Steven Hogan labored to 39 from 82 deliveries, highlighting the control exerted by the Indian bowlers over the Australian batsmen.
