Andy Pycroft has been confirmed as the match referee for the highly anticipated India-Pakistan clash in the Asia Cup, taking place on Sunday, September 21. Cricbuzz confirms that the International Cricket Council (ICC) has communicated his appointment to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for this Super Four encounter at the Dubai International Stadium.
Following an inquiry, the ICC is adamant about protecting the integrity of its officials and insists no questions shall be raised about Pycroft’s credibility now that he has been cleared. “Once a fair inquiry exonerates a match official, their integrity and credibility must not be questioned,” stated a source knowledgeable about the developments in Dubai.
Pycroft’s duties don’t end with the India-Pakistan match; he will also referee Pakistan’s Super Four game against Bangladesh on September 25. Meanwhile, for Pakistan vs. Sri Lanka on September 23, West Indian Richie Richardson will step in. The ICC has planned that Pycroft will oversee all Dubai matches, while Richardson will handle those in Abu Dhabi, staying committed to this structure.
Consequently, Pycroft will supervise the India-Bangladesh match in Dubai on September 24, as he will for the Sri Lanka-Bangladesh game the day prior. The final match official appointment on September 28 in Dubai is yet to be made and, as is customary, will be determined based on officials’ performances throughout the tournament.
The ICC emphasizes that match official appointments follow their policy, eliminating any member boards’ involvement in the decision-making process. This stance has been strongly advocated by ICC CEO Sanjog Gupta, highlighting the governing body’s role in ensuring officials are not influenced by external pressures.
Pycroft’s reappointment might have compelled the Pakistan team to cancel their pre-match press conference, as was the case prior to their last match against the UAE on September 17, which sparked controversy and delayed the match start. These actions by Pakistan appear puzzling since the PCB had publicly spoken of Pycroft’s regret over a handshake incident, sharing the related video with the media whilst providing no further comments.
There seems to be some confusion over Ramiz Raja’s comments regarding Pycroft’s involvement in 90 India matches. In truth, the Zimbabwean has officiated over 100 matches for Pakistan, more than 110 for England, and over 120 for India, with a total exceeding 530 games across all formats internationally.
