Afghanistan’s head coach, Jonathon Trott, reflected on the team’s early exit from the Asia Cup, saying that setbacks sometimes help teams regroup. Despite being favorites to advance beyond the group stage, Afghanistan faced back-to-back defeats against Bangladesh and Sri Lanka that ended their hopes.

Sri Lanka secured their spot in the Super 4s with a decisive six-wicket victory over Afghanistan in the final Group B match, ensuring Bangladesh’s advancement and Afghanistan’s exit, despite Mohammad Nabi’s impressive 22-ball 60 that helped push their score to 169/8.

“It was very disappointing and a tough defeat to accept. We thought we were set up well, considering 170 a competitive score after Nabi’s performance. However, their batters capitalized on our missed opportunities with the ball and in the field,” Trott stated.

“Our power play performance with the ball was not up to the mark. We made too many fundamental errors in all departments, making it difficult to win matches in such tournaments,” Trott explained to the press.

“We came into this tournament with great aspirations. We need to assess why we couldn’t meet them.”

“With plenty of T20 matches ahead, including the World Cup in February, it’s crucial for both coaches and players to deeply analyze our shortcomings and improve.”

“These setbacks might help us realign and avoid repeating our mistakes,” Trott concluded.

Trott also mentioned that the absence of Naveen-ul-Haq, out due to injury, was a significant loss. “Missing a key pace bowler like Naveen changed the dynamics for us.”

“We’ll need to ensure we have depth in our bowling options,” he noted.

Meanwhile, Kusal Mendis from the Sri Lankan team expressed satisfaction with their approach against Afghanistan’s spinners.

“We anticipated a lot of spin and planned to bat steadily for the first 12 overs. Kusal Perera’s performance helped maintain a steady run rate, simplifying the chase in the middle overs,” Mendis said.

“We decided to keep batting sensibly until the 13th over, expecting pace overs later on, and prepared for that strategically,” he added.

“We stretched the game, aiming to target the spin overs at the end. Their spinners are commendable,” Mendis concluded.
