Chanderpaul Headlines Changes in West Indies Squad for India Test Series

Chanderpaul Leads the Charge: Revamped West Indies Squad Set for India Test Series

Cricket West Indies (CWI) has unveiled its 15-member squad for the upcoming two-Test series against India, scheduled from October 2nd to 14th, with matches taking place in Ahmedabad and Delhi. This series is part of the ICC World Test Championship and marks the team’s first overseas assignment in the new cycle, as well as their first Test tour in India since 2018.

Head Coach Daren Sammy noted the challenges of playing in the subcontinent, highlighting the team’s competitive selection for these conditions. He emphasized the team’s unity and commitment to their strategy, building upon their previous series as a test team.

The squad sees three changes from the recent series against Australia, with Tagenarine Chanderpaul, Alick Athanaze, and debutant left-arm spinner Khary Pierre joining the lineup. These changes aim to enhance performance on India’s playing surfaces against a strong opponent.

Miles Bascombe, West Indies’ Director of Cricket, mentioned that player selections were influenced by recent performances and suitability for the conditions, while also focusing on maintaining continuity and depth for consistent competition throughout the World Test Championship cycle. Chanderpaul and Athanaze strengthen the batting order, and Pierre joins as a specialist spinner following his impressive 41 wickets in the West Indies Championship.

Gudakesh Motie has been rested ahead of upcoming limited-overs matches, particularly the ICC T20 World Cup scheduled for February and March next year. The team will leave the Caribbean on September 22, arriving in Ahmedabad by September 24.
