On Monday, September 15, Mohammod Hossain, the head of Bangladesh Cricket Board’s newly formed election commission and a senior advocate of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh, stated that he does not anticipate any undue influence if Aminul Islam remains as BCB president during the election period.
Aminul, currently at the helm of the board, is set to compete against Tamim Iqbal in a battle that appears to be leaning more towards politics than cricket, with recent developments stirring concerns ahead of the elections. Read more.
Cricbuzz previously reported that Aminul is anticipated to run from Dhaka Division. It has been revealed he replaced Mohammad Ashraful as a councillor for the division after Ashraful didn’t secure a position through the National Sports Council (NSC). This opened the door for Aminul’s entry, taking over from Faruque Ahmed.
Another BCB director, Nazmul Abedin, who joined the board via NSC, now represents a district. The two vacant NSC seats are likely to be filled by Aminul’s supporters, with the presidential election ultimately determined by the votes of the 25-member board.
Aminul, reportedly backed by the government in his bid against Tamim, is allegedly leveraging all possible influence to maintain his role as BCB president. Meanwhile, Tamim has urged Aminul to step down to ensure a fair competition.
In an exclusive conversation with Cricbuzz, election commissioner Hossain affirmed the election is set for October 4. “The BCB’s decision to extend the councillorship form deadline will not affect the election date. The election process will start on September 20,” Hossain remarked.
Hossain dismissed concerns about Aminul’s continued presence as BCB president affecting the election. “The rule allows the old committee to remain until a new one is formed. Legally, there is no restriction against a former president contesting again,” he clarified.
He further explained, “In any association or federation, the old committee remains in place until the election. The Election Commission is in charge and holds supreme authority over the election proceedings.”
“There will be no interference from Aminul’s role during the election as the commission operates independently,” Hossain assured. “Any qualified individual can contest with valid nomination papers without issues.”
On September 14, BCB extended the submission deadline for the 2025 Councilor Nomination Form. “Originally set for September 17, the deadline is now September 19, 2025. Concerned parties should ensure timely submissions,” read a BCB statement.
