“Don’t jump to conclusions,” Sourav Ganguly told the media in Kolkata on Sunday (September 14) regarding his potential return as the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). For now, he resumes his role as president of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), a post he held from 2015 to 2019.
The CAB elections are set for September 22 during their AGM. Ganguly’s return as CAB president was finalized after he submitted his nomination on Sunday (September 14). As he was the sole nominee, he will be elected without opposition. He succeeds his elder brother, Snehasish Ganguly, who has been in the position since 2019.
The BCCI elections are slated for September 28, with speculation surrounding Ganguly potentially resuming his role as BCCI president. He previously served from 2019 to 2022 before Roger Binny succeeded him. The CAB has nominated Ganguly for the AGM as its representative, keeping him theoretically in the running for the BCCI role. His name is expected to remain in discussions until nominations are due on September 20-21.
“I extend my gratitude for everyone’s support. At CAB, there’s no opposition; we’re all part of this Association. We’ll collaborate to advance CAB and Bengal cricket,” Ganguly remarked upon election. “There are critical events ahead at Eden Gardens – India’s Test against South Africa, the T20 World Cup, and the Bengal Pro T20 League. I’ll strive to give my best.”
The unopposed panel nominated includes Nitish Ranjan Dutta (vice-president), Bablu Koley (secretary), Madan Mohan Ghosh (joint secretary), and Sanjay Das (Treasurer).
Commenting on his team, Ganguly stated, “Bablu Koley brings vast experience. It’s critical to have someone of his expertise and knowledge. Nitish Ranjan Dutta, Madan Mohan Ghosh, and Sanjay Das are also experienced, having extensive backgrounds in this field. Their collective expertise will significantly benefit Bengal cricket.”
