India Shines: Dhakshineswar’s Debut and Nagal’s Triumph Kick Off Davis Cup 2025

India's Davis Cup 2025: Dhakshineswar Dazzles and Nagal Triumphs

Dhakshineswar Suresh delivered a remarkable performance, defeating Jerome Kym 7-6(5), 6-3, which set the stage for Sumit Nagal to capitalize on this momentum by defeating Marc-Andrea Huesler 6-3, 7-6(4). This impressive duo gave India a strong 2-0 lead against Switzerland in the Davis Cup World Group-1 tie on the indoor hard courts in Biel on Friday.

Despite being ranked 626 and making his Davis Cup debut, 25-year-old Dhakshineswar showcased his talent with powerful serves and a vigorous all-court strategy. A crucial moment in the match came when Dhakshineswar managed to escape from a 0-40 deficit in the fourth game of the first set and saved breakpoints in the fifth and seventh games of the second set.

Demonstrating considerable poise, he successfully navigated the first set tie-break. “It feels like a dream. I tried to stay calm and play my game. There was pressure, but I am happy to have handled it well. It turned out positively,” Dhakshineswar stated.

As a student-athlete from Wake Forest University in the USA, Dhakshineswar has been performing well in the professional circuit. His ability to overcome several breakpoints led to a strong start for India against Switzerland’s top player, ranked 155 globally. “After breaking him, I felt confident, focusing on my serve and playing a solid game to finish,” he said, concluding the match with an ace and a celebratory clenched fist.
