Mastering the Details: Abhishek Nayar’s Strategic Ascent in Women’s Cricket Coaching for WPL 2026

Precision Play: Abhishek Nayar's Transformative Journey in Women's Cricket Leadership for WPL 2026

Abhishek Nayar, who has extensive experience with men’s international and franchise cricket teams, stepped into uncharted territory this season as the head coach of UP Warriorz in the Women’s Premier League (WPL). While Nayar has previously worked in mentoring roles with women’s teams, this is his first experience managing an entire team as head coach, a role that presents unique challenges.

Nayar acknowledges the difficulty of the transition, stating, “I’m wrapping my head around it. Many coaches advised me to be straightforward in communication. With men’s cricket, familiarity breeds trust, which sometimes allows for more direct communication. However, in women’s cricket, attention to detail is crucial. You often need to explain things more explicitly than you might expect.”

He continued, “It’s not always intuitive, and I find myself reminding myself to communicate openly. The players are incredibly receptive, which is really encouraging.”

Before this role, Nayar served as an assistant coach for India’s men’s team and is currently the head coach of Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League. But he notes that coaching in the WPL is a distinct challenge. “In men’s cricket, you have to be precise with your words, but in women’s cricket, the players are open to discussions and details. Building trust takes time, and I am focusing on that,” he explained.

A recent decision to ‘retire out’ Harleen Deol during a match against Delhi Capitals drew criticism after the middle-order struggled post her exit, although she made a strong comeback with a half-century against the Mumbai Indians. Nayar admits that such strategic decisions can become pressure points when misunderstood by outsiders.

Reflecting on the experience, he said, “This role is different. It’s enjoyable and challenging, pushing me in various ways and preparing me differently for the IPL. Yet, it hasn’t been easy.”

So far, the Warriorz have secured just one win in their four matches.
