Strategic Reserves: Suryakumar’s Silence Before the T20 Symphony
As India prepares to defend its T20 World Cup title on home soil, there are notable concerns surrounding captain Suryakumar Yadav’s current form. In 2025, he managed to score only 213 runs over 20 matches and 18 innings, with an average exceeding just 14.
Despite this, former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh remains optimistic that Suryakumar will regain his performance level once the ICC tournament kicks off on February 7. “Perhaps he is saving his best for the World Cup,” Harbhajan commented at an event marking the partnership between Mumbai Indians and Malaysia Airlines.
Harbhajan praised Suryakumar, saying, “Surya is a class player without a doubt. I still hold the view that he is likely the number one player in this format. While there is much praise for AB de Villiers, we have our own player who performs a similar role. I am confident he will deliver for India in this World Cup,” he added. “I am hoping not only for his leadership but also for significant contributions as a batter.”
Having been part of India’s T20 World Cup-winning team in 2007 and the ODI World Cup in 2011, Harbhajan doesn’t believe playing on home turf will place additional pressure on the Indian team.
“Facing international cricket naturally brings pressure, but the venue is irrelevant. It’s a privilege to play in front of a home crowd, in your own environment. You are more familiar with the conditions than others, and the support is incredible,” Harbhajan stated.
“Our matches overseas often feel like playing in India due to the support we receive, but the atmosphere at home is unique. I trust our team will perform well here.”
Harbhajan is confident that India’s well-rounded team will excel. “This team has all the essentials. Whether it’s the batting or bowling lineup, every player is exceptional and capable of winning matches,” he said. “We hope the trophy remains in India, making it the first time the nation wins it consecutively in 2024 and 2026. It would be exciting,” he said.
Harbhajan Supports Kohli Against Manjrekar’s Criticism
Recently, former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar criticized Virat Kohli, suggesting that by continuing to play only 50-over cricket and retiring from Tests, he took an easier path, as it was the format he struggled in most.
Yet, Harbhajan stood by Kohli. “Scoring runs effortlessly in any format is a misconception, otherwise everyone would achieve it,” he remarked. “Let’s appreciate the performances. Whether it’s Virat or others, they have all been remarkable players and match winners for India…”
“They inspire future generations. Manjrekar has his perspective, but I see that Virat and his peers have played a significant role in advancing the game,” Harbhajan asserted.
Although Kohli has retired from Tests, he excels in ODIs and aspires to play until the 2027 ODI World Cup. “Virat is an exceptional player. If he returned to Test cricket now, he would still be a key player.”
Kohli recently scored 93 in the first ODI against New Zealand on Sunday, following impressive scores of 135, 102, and 65 not out against South Africa.
The Art of Bowling Off-Spin
Harbhajan expressed concern about the declining interest in off-spin bowling.
“Many believe off-spin bowling is simplistic, but it’s actually an art lacking practitioners. It requires substantial effort,” he explained. “If it were easy, there would be thousands of off-spinners, yet it’s rare to find one today…”
He also wished Washington Sundar a swift recovery from a side strain injury sustained in Vadodara, which sidelined him for the remainder of the ODI series.
