Karun and Harvik Lead Karnataka and Saurashtra to Semis in Vijay Hazare Trophy 2025-26
In a splendid display, Devdutt Padikkal (81 off 95 balls, 11 fours) and Karun Nair (74 off 80 balls, 11 fours) guided Karnataka to a 55-run win over Mumbai using the VJD method in the Vijay Hazare Trophy quarterfinal at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (1) Ground on Monday.
Karnataka reached a comfortable 187 for one while chasing 255 when play was halted due to fading light and drizzle, declaring them the victors.
The challenging overcast conditions provided the pitch with zip and bounce, making run scoring difficult, but Padikkal and Nair managed the chase skillfully.
Padikkal, the leading run-scorer of the tournament at that point, was fortunate with two dropped catches. On 24, Omkar Tarmale failed to grasp the ball running in from fine-leg, and shortly after, Angkrish Raghuvanshi spilled a straightforward catch at slip.
Karun Nair regained form after a brief dip, starting off with a strong back-foot drive to score his first runs on his third ball.
Mumbai, missing key players like Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, and Shivam Dube due to national duties, further suffered with Sarfaraz Khan out injured and fast bowler Tushar Deshpande unavailable for personal reasons.
Asked to bat first, Mumbai struggled against Karnataka’s sharp seam attack in favorable conditions. Vidyadhar Patil capitalized on the uncertainty corridor and took three wickets.
Reduced to 60 for four, Shams Mulani (86 off 91 balls, 8 fours) staged a recovery. Siddhesh Lad (38 off 54 balls, 4 fours) provided assistance, and Sairaj Patil (33* off 25 balls, 5 fours, 1 six) swung ambitiously at the end to help Mumbai reach a respectable total.
Additionally, in another weather-affected quarterfinal, Saurashtra, led by an unbeaten century from captain Harvik Desai (100* off 116 balls, 8 fours, 2 sixes), defeated Uttar Pradesh at the BCCI CoE (2).
With Saurashtra at 238 for three in pursuit of 311, cover was called in, but they were ahead in the VJD calculations, securing the win.
Karnataka awaits the winner of the Delhi vs Vidarbha quarterfinal scheduled for Tuesday, while Saurashtra will face the victor of the Punjab vs Madhya Pradesh clash in the semifinal round.
