Hampshire Signs Washington to Bolster Squad for County Finale
Hampshire has announced the signing of Indian all-rounder Washington Sundar for their final two County Championship matches. This strategic move comes in response to a significant points deduction that could potentially lead to relegation challenges for the team.
The points penalty, totaling eight, was imposed by the Cricket Discipline Panel due to issues with a sub-standard pitch during Hampshire’s May fixture against Sussex. The penalty was decided after a recent hearing, resulting in Hampshire receiving both a fine and a reduction in points.
As a result, Hampshire finds itself perilously close to the relegation zone. Their recent match against Sussex concluded in a draw due to rain, intensifying the pressure for upcoming games against top contenders Somerset and Surrey.
Hampshire is hopeful that Washington Sundar’s addition will enhance their performance and aid in their bid for survival. Sundar, 25, recently showcased his talent as part of the Indian Test squad in England, where he scored 284 runs at an average of 47. “We’re delighted to bring Washington to the club for the County Championship,” noted Giles White, Director of Cricket. “He had an excellent series against England this summer and he’ll play a key role with two big games coming up against Somerset and Surrey.”
