Smriti Mandhana: Crafting T20 Poetry Amidst the Chaos

Smriti Mandhana: Mastering T20 Elegance in Dynamic Play

Smriti Mandhana’s batting style is undeniably beautiful and timeless. It’s a beauty that only grows with time, something even the poet John Keats, known for his timeless expressions in Endymion, would have appreciated. Smriti’s batting can truly be described as poetry in motion. Her effortless drives, graceful lofts, and nimble footwork present some of the most aesthetically pleasing moments in modern sports.

She wields her bat like an artist with a brush. Even in the fast-paced realm of T20 cricket, where time to strategize is limited, she manages to craft lasting masterpieces, much like her performance on Sunday in the fourth T20I against Sri Lanka at Greenfield Stadium.

In her commanding 48-ball 80, Smriti achieved a remarkable milestone by becoming just the fourth woman to accumulate 10,000 international runs in history. Impressively, she is the second Indian to reach this feat, following in the footsteps of Mithali Raj, who witnessed Smriti’s achievement from the commentary box. This prestigious group was first joined by England’s Charlotte Edwards, and New Zealand’s Suzie Bates is also a member.

Mithali leads the scoreboard with 10,868 runs, followed by Bates (10,652) and Edwards (10,273). Smriti reached this landmark faster than any of them, in just 281 innings—10 fewer than her nearest compatriot. At 29, she is well-positioned to top this list in the future.

The majority of her impressive runs come from limited-overs cricket due to the scarcity of Test matches in women’s cricket. Despite having played only seven Tests, where she scored two centuries, she has also amassed 14 centuries in ODIs and one in T20Is.

During the World Cup, where she finished as the tournament’s second-leading scorer, she became the first woman to reach 1,000 ODI runs in a calendar year. Smriti continues to shatter records while her exquisite play brings joy to her fans everywhere.
