Tribute to Hugh Morris: Celebrated Cricketer and Administrator Passes Away at 62

Farewell to Hugh Morris: Cricket Legend and Former Administrator Dies at 62

Hugh Morris, the distinguished former England cricketer and ex-chief executive of the England and Wales Cricket Board, passed away at the age of 62.

Glamorgan, the Welsh county cricket team where Morris excelled both as a player and captain, announced his passing on Sunday. In their statement, they revealed that Morris succumbed after battling an “extremely difficult” period in recent years, during which he was diagnosed with bowel cancer.

Morris, an opening batsman, represented England in three matches. He played a pivotal role in leading Glamorgan to become county champions in 1997, the year he retired. Throughout his first-class cricket career, he amassed a remarkable 19,785 runs, maintaining a batting average of 40.29.

Following his playing days, Morris dedicated 16 years to the ECB, undertaking various roles, including CEO, through a successful era for the men’s national team.

In 2013, Morris returned to Glamorgan as CEO, where he successfully navigated the team through financial challenges.

Dan Cherry, Glamorgan’s current CEO, paid tribute to Morris, describing him as “a great player, a tireless administrator, and a fine human being of great dignity and integrity.”

Cherry highlighted Morris’s lasting contributions, stating, “Hugh leaves us with an outstanding legacy, including a world-class stadium here at Sophia Gardens—a significant transformation from the ground he first graced as a teenager. Additionally, the Welsh Fire franchise in The Hundred competition stands poised for even greater achievements in the cricketing landscape of the 2020s and beyond.”
