Boxing Day Ashes 2025: Richardson’s Comeback Headlines Australia’s Test Lineup

Richardson's Redemption: A Boxing Day Ashes Spectacle 2025

Steve Smith is set to rejoin the action in the Boxing Day Test against England, as Australia decides to field a 12-man squad featuring four fast bowlers. Spinner Todd Murphy, who was brought in to replace the injured Nathan Lyon, will not be part of the lineup. Fast bowler Jhye Richardson makes his return to the longest format since 2021, following impressive domestic performances after recovering from shoulder surgery.

The squad includes Travis Head, Jake Weatherald, Marnus Labuschagne, captain Steve Smith, Usman Khawaja, wicketkeeper Alex Carey, Cameron Green, Mitchell Starc, Scott Boland, Brendan Doggett, Michael Neser, and Jhye Richardson. Brendan Doggett, who participated in the first two Tests, and Michael Neser, part of the pink-ball match, have also been included, showcasing Australia’s preference for an all-pace attack.

Smith, who missed the Adelaide Test due to vertigo, spoke to reporters about the pitch conditions, noting the presence of 10mm of grass and its green, furry nature. He anticipated similar conditions to those experienced, which include cold and overcast weather likely to offer considerable movement, benefiting seam bowlers.

Richardson’s last red-ball match appearance was against England in December 2021, where he claimed five wickets to lead Australia to a 275-run victory. Smith expressed excitement about Richardson’s return, praising his skills and previous performances against England in the Ashes.

Usman Khawaja, who scored 82 and 40 in the last Test as Smith’s late replacement and has an average over 60 in those innings, retains his spot over Josh Inglis. Khawaja’s performance as a last-minute inclusion has earned him a place in the potential playing XI, demonstrating his aptitude in key moments.

Smith commended Khawaja’s performance, saying, “It was fortunate that Usman came in and played the way he did in that first innings. He applied pressure effectively and absorbed it when needed. He now holds the No.5 spot.”

Additionally, Cameron Green’s overall skillset is praised for its contribution at the No.7 position. Australia, having already secured the series with a 3-0 lead, faces England with renewed vigor under Smith’s captaincy.
