Ishan’s Brilliance and Dhoni’s Wisdom: Jharkhand’s Triumphant Title Breakthrough
The anticipation was palpable as Jharkhand stood on the brink of a historic victory in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, needing only one more wicket to secure its first title in the tournament.
The atmosphere in the president’s pavilion at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Gahunje, near Pune, was joyous among the families of cricketers and officials. Yet, elsewhere in the stadium, Saurabh Tiwary and Shahbaz Nadeem remained composed.
Encouraged by a friend to celebrate early, Tiwary replied cautiously, “Arey, ruk jaao thoda… (wait a bit).” Beside him, Nadeem concurred with a grin, “Cricket hai bhai, last tak kuch keh nahi sakte (this is cricket, you can’t say anything till the end).”
Their restraint stemmed from their experiences as former cricketers who had seen thrilling matches fall through. Now, with a chance to make history, patience was paramount.
Jharkhand had faced near-misses before, losing to Bengal in the 2017 Vijay Hazare Trophy semifinal and the Ranji Trophy quarterfinal three years prior. But this time, Ishan Kishan’s leadership guided them to victory, defeating Haryana in the final and securing ten wins out of eleven in the tournament. Captain Kishan was pivotal, amassing 517 runs in the competition.

The victory was not just about the players; it was a testament to the rebuilt Jharkhand model, overseen by Tiwary and Nadeem, now office-bearers in the Jharkhand State Cricket Association (JSCA). Their efforts were augmented by Mahendra Singh Dhoni, a foundational figure in Jharkhand cricket.
Dhoni’s influence extended beyond strategic insights; he was integral in selecting the coaching staff. He emphasized finding coaches who resonated with local players over big names. Following his advice, Jharkhand appointed Ratan Kumar, Sunny Gupta, and Madhusudan Tantubhai, whom together aligned with the players’ cultural ethos.

“Dhoni guided us to choose local coaches who could communicate better and understand the players’ backgrounds,” Nadeem shared. Dhoni’s regular discussions with players bolstered mental resilience, drawing from his international experience.
One key recommendation from Dhoni was to modify the State’s domestic cricket framework, incorporating multi-day formats for juniors. This shift was significant, transitioning the focus from solely white-ball formats to nurturing comprehensive cricket skills at various levels.

This structural change required maximizing player potential. Under Ishan’s guidance, the team evolved with a clear understanding of roles and assurance from the management, fostering a supportive environment.
A significant contributor, Kumar Kushagra, credited the setup’s faith in players which was established early in Ahmedabad. Emphasis was placed on teamwork, allowing players like Robin Minz and Anukul Roy to adapt and impact games decisively.
Ishan’s leadership was pivotal; he maintained accountability and encouraged strategic unity. By assuming responsibility and backing his team, he inspired confidence and clarity in objectives, which galvanised the players.

The commitment to a clear approach allowed players to deliver under pressure, exemplified by Ishan’s assurance in taking calculative risks and the team’s ability to adapt as necessary, ensuring resilience against adversity.
This cohesive strategy brought harmony and success, allowing Jharkhand to pursue and realize its longstanding aspirations with determination and skill, reflecting in their ultimate victory.
