India’s Record-Breaking T20I Chase: A Historic Triumph

India's Unprecedented T20I Chase: A Landmark Victory

Quinton de Kock delivered a remarkable performance, scoring 90 runs off just 46 balls, leading South Africa to a total of 213 for four in the first innings of the second T20I in their five-match series against India on Thursday.

For India to achieve this target, it would surpass their record for the highest successful chase in T20Is. Their current record stands at 209, achieved against Australia in 2023. In that match, despite Josh Inglis scoring a century in the first innings, fifties from Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan secured a two-wicket victory for India.

India’s highest total in a T20I second innings is 244 for four, a match that ended in a narrow one-run loss to West Indies in Fort Lauderdale in 2016. In that game, K.L. Rahul hit a century from 46 balls after West Indies set a target of 245 for six, but India fell short as Dhoni was dismissed on the final delivery by Dwayne Bravo.

Below is a list of India’s top successful run-chases in T20Is:

  • 209 vs Australia – Vizag, 2023
  • 208 vs West Indies – Hyderabad, 2019
  • 207 vs Sri Lanka – Mohali, 2009
  • 204 vs New Zealand – Auckland, 2020
  • 202 vs Australia – Rajkot, 2013
