Hardik Shines as India Dominates South Africa in T20I Series Opener
Hardik Pandya’s impressive performance had both analysts and fans questioning whether he successfully navigated challenging conditions or capitalized on rapidly improving ones. His efforts were evident in South Africa’s collapse, leading to their 101-run defeat in the first T20I at the Barabati Stadium on Tuesday.
South Africa’s dramatic fall added luster to Hardik’s half-century, as the all-rounder played a pivotal role in helping India recover from a precarious position to set a 176-run target. The visitors were bowled out in just 12.3 overs, recording their lowest score in this format.
Arshdeep Singh made an early impact with the new ball, enticing an edge from Quinton de Kock that Abhishek Sharma safely caught at second slip. Tristan Stubbs fell victim to an inside edge, fooled by Arshdeep’s wobble seam, with Jitesh Sharma taking a low catch that was affirmed through a successful review.
Spin further compounded the visitors’ woes, as Axar Patel dismissed Aiden Markram with a delivery that sent the leg stump cartwheeling. It triggered a collapse, with David Miller and Donovan Ferreira’s consecutive dismissals plunging South Africa to 50 for five.
Varun Chakaravarthy’s googly then accounted for Marco Jansen, while Jasprit Bumrah dismissed the threatening Dewald Brevis and Keshav Maharaj, achieving his 100th T20I wicket in the process, helping India swiftly clean up the lower order for a decisive victory.
Earlier, Jansen emerged as a formidable barrier for India, with the Proteas pressuring the hosts to seize early momentum. Lungi Ngidi leveraged the pace-friendly pitch to send back Shubman Gill and skipper Suryakumar Yadav.
Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Verma adopted a cautious approach. Abhishek’s attempt at a fine swivel for four was thwarted by Jansen’s remarkable 11-meter sprint, resulting in a stunning catch off Lutho Sipamla’s bowling, leaving the Indian supporters stunned.
With India three wickets down and temperatures dipping to 19°C, the crowd needed a spark, which Tilak provided with a massive six off Nortje, launching the ball out of the stadium.
India appeared to regain momentum until Jansen stalled their advance, taking an outstanding deep fine leg catch to remove Tilak. The responsibility then fell on Hardik, who smashed two sixes off Maharaj to relieve pressure and lift the run rate. Despite losing Axar Patel and Shivam Dube, Hardik and Jitesh Sharma extracted 18 runs from the penultimate over.
Hardik’s 100th career T20I six marked his half-century off just 25 balls, a dazzling innings that laid the groundwork for India’s memorable win.
