Smith Dismisses Controversy: Lyon’s Exclusion Is Strategic, Not Personal

Smith Clarifies: Lyon’s Omission Driven by Strategy, Not Sentiment

Australian stand-in captain Steve Smith addressed the controversy surrounding Nathan Lyon’s exclusion from the second Ashes Test in Brisbane. He explained that the decision aimed to bolster the pace-bowling lineup and wasn’t personal against the veteran spinner.

Lyon, who missed out on a home Test for the first time in 13 years, described his feelings as “absolutely filthy.” Chair of selectors, George Bailey, assured that Lyon’s exclusion was a “one-Test decision” and confirmed his spot in the eleven for the third Test in Adelaide.

Post-match, Fox Sports quoted Smith saying, “The decision wasn’t against Nathan. He’s exceptional.” Australia secured an eight-wicket victory against Ben Stokes’ England in Brisbane, leading the series 2-0.

Smith explained, “Lyon has been our spinner for a long time, but the extra batting depth and the tail’s effort for 50 overs provided the balance needed.”

Australian tail-enders, Michael Neser (16) and Brendan Doggett (13), contributed significantly, alongside Mitchell Starc’s 77, helping Australia post a formidable 511 in the first innings. Neser’s five-wicket haul in the second innings was crucial in Australia’s commanding win.

“Neser offers variety. He allows strategic field placements, maintains pressure, and tests batters with his precision,” Smith noted, praising Neser while affirming Lyon’s brilliance.

Lyon ranks seventh on the all-time Test wicket-takers list with 562 scalps and is Australia’s second-most successful spin bowler after Shane Warne.

Top-order batter Marnus Labuschagne suggested that Lyon’s inclusion for the Adelaide Test could provide necessary team balance. “Selectors evaluate each game objectively, considering what strategies maximize our chances,” ICC quoted Labuschagne.

The Adelaide Test is scheduled to begin on December 17, following the strategic choices made for the Brisbane pink-ball game.
