Four Fresh Faces: New Zealand’s World Cup Debutants

New Zealand's Rising Stars: World Cup Debutants Unveiled

New Zealand has introduced four newcomers to their squad for the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025, with Sophie Devine leading the team in what will be her final ODI event. The squad, featuring first-time World Cup players Flora Devonshire, Polly Inglis, Bella James, and Bree Illing, was announced in Auckland by former World Cup-winning captain Emily Drumm.

The new additions to the roster have already made their mark during New Zealand’s last summer series and the ‘A’ tour of England. Flora Devonshire impressed with both her spin bowling and batting in the Hallyburton Johnstone (HBJ) Shield, while Polly Inglis, not just a top scorer but also a backup wicketkeeper, contributed significantly to Otago Sparks’ championship win. Bree Illing, a left-arm seamer, made noteworthy performances, including topping the wicket charts on the England tour, while Bella James was a leading run-scorer for New Zealand ‘A’ during the same series.

The inclusions of these players mean seasoned players Fran Jonas, Lauren Down, Molly Penfold, and Hannah Rowe won’t be part of this World Cup campaign. However, the squad maintains a blend of fresh talent and experienced veterans like Suzie Bates, who, alongside Devine, will participate in her fifth World Cup. Lea Tahuhu is set for her fourth appearance, with Maddy Green and Melie Kerr having their third.

The White Ferns’ journey begins with warm-up games in Bengaluru, leading to their first official World Cup match against Australia in Indore on October 1.

New Zealand’s squad includes: Sophie Devine (c), Suzie Bates, Eden Carson, Flora Devonshire, Izzy Gaze, Maddy Green, Brooke Halliday, Bree Illing, Polly Inglis, Bella James, Jess Kerr, Melie Kerr, Rosemary Mair, Georgia Plimmer, and Lea Tahuhu.
