Shardul Thakur Eyes ODI World Cup 2027, Prepares for Test Duty in India
In the midst of a crowded field of all-rounders in Indian cricket, Mumbai captain Shardul Thakur has been quietly steering his team to successful campaigns in the Ranji Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT), while setting his sights on the 2027 ODI World Cup.
“Currently, I’m not part of the T20I setup; that’s clear. However, with the upcoming one-day World Cup, and given my good performance in my last ODI in 2023, I’m focused on making a return. I was in the 2023 World Cup squad and participated in series like the Champions Trophy where spinners were commonly used,” Shardul shared with Sportstar after Mumbai defeated Chhattisgarh by eight wickets at the Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on Saturday, earning a place in the SMAT Super League phase.
Though Shardul has recently been positioned as a third or fourth seamer for India in ODIs, he is flourishing as Mumbai’s lead bowler in the PowerPlay during the current domestic T20 series. Against Chhattisgarh, he claimed three wickets within the first six overs using precise “nose-and-toes” lengths. Earlier in the tournament, he picked up four wickets in just his first seven balls against Assam.
Shardul attributes his PowerPlay success to increased pace and bounce and an enhanced understanding of conditions. “Using the conditions wisely and reading the pitch promptly is key. Matches starting at 9 or 11 in the morning differ from afternoon or evening games. Adaptability is essential, and though experience has strengthened my adaptability, accurately reading pitches remains crucial,” Shardul remarked.
As the 2027 ODI World Cup looms in South Africa, where fast-bowling conditions prevail, Shardul is optimistic about participating. However, he recognizes that competing against players like Hardik Pandya means he must elevate his batting prowess. “I’m batting well and contributing in various aspects. The focus remains on seizing opportunities to make match-winning contributions, whether through batting, bowling, or fielding,” he said.
Beyond one-day cricket, Shardul is eager to secure a regular spot in Test matches. Despite his limited appearances in the longest format, mainly abroad, he showcased his all-round skills in the 2024-25 season, accumulating over 505 runs and 35 wickets. “I’m effective on turning tracks in the Ranji Trophy, taking wickets, bowling extensively, and scoring runs. I’m ready for Test opportunities in India,” he asserted.
Currently, in the ongoing Ranji Trophy, Shardul has led Mumbai to the top of their group after five matches, with personal stats including 10 wickets and 113 runs, featuring a half-century.
