Khawaja’s Omission Shakes Up Ashes Second Test Lineup 2025-26
Australia’s opening batsman, Usman Khawaja, has been sidelined for the second Ashes Test against England in Brisbane due to a back issue, as announced by the team on Tuesday. Khawaja missed the opportunity to open in either innings of the series opener in Perth due to back spasms and was seen struggling on Monday during a practice session at Brisbane’s Gabba ground, where the second Test is set to commence on Thursday.
“It’s difficult because he’s worked hard since the last match to get his body ready, but unfortunately, he’s not fit to play,” Australian fast bowler Scott Boland stated on Tuesday. “He seemed well in the nets, but apparently he felt he wasn’t prepared to play.”
With the 38-year-old Khawaja not being replaced in the squad, it is highly probable that Travis Head will continue his role as an opener, following his exceptional 123-run innings as a makeshift opener in Perth, which significantly contributed to Australia’s eight-wicket triumph.
In related news, England has also announced their playing XI for the second Ashes Test, with Will Jacks stepping in for the injured Mark Wood.
“I’m unsure about the middle-order, but I expect Travis Head to open,” Boland added. “One of the greatest strengths of our team over the years has been our ability to have someone step up and perform when another player is out, whether due to form or injury.”
Although Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith have both served as openers since David Warner’s retirement, Labuschagne confirmed on Monday that neither of them would be taking on the role this time.
Khawaja will remain with the team, keeping alive his hopes of continuing his Test career beyond his 39th birthday next month.
