Travis Head Celestial Century Leads Australia in Thrilling Ashes Opener

Starc Pledges Focus on Test Cricket After T20I Farewell

On Saturday, Steve Smith praised Travis Head’s remarkable 69-ball century, which secured Australia’s victory in the first Ashes Test, as one of the finest innings he’s ever witnessed, describing it as “out of this world.”

Head’s explosive performance, the third-fastest century by an Australian, propelled the team to an eight-wicket win over England in Perth. After being promoted to the top of the order due to Usman Khawaja’s injury, Head reached his century with 12 fours and four sixes.

His 69-ball century is tied with David Warner’s effort against India in 2012, behind only Adam Gilchrist’s 57-ball feat against England in 2006 and Jack Gregory’s performance against South Africa over a century ago. The fastest century remains Brendon McCullum’s 54-ball innings against Australia in 2016.

“That was incredible to witness,” said acting captain Smith. “Travis’s innings was phenomenal, playing some outrageous shots. Even when he mistimed a few, they still found the gap. It was just one of those days where everything clicked for him.”

Head’s outstanding innings followed a powerful bowling display by Scott Boland and Mitchell Starc after lunch, triggering a dramatic collapse for England. From a strong position at 65 for one, England crumbled, losing four wickets in as many overs. Although they partially recovered, the team was all out for 164 just before tea.

Reflecting on his performance, Head said, “To contribute like I did feels pretty special. It’s all happened so fast. Maybe it’ll sink in tonight or in a few days.”
