High Stakes in Guwahati: India-South Africa Test Series Reaches Its Apex
Test cricket in India is set to explore new grounds as the ACA Stadium in Guwahati hosts the second match against South Africa, beginning this Saturday. This will mark the first time a Test match is held in North-East India, making it the 30th venue in the country to host such an event.
Due to the geographical location and the time of year, there are unique scheduling details for this match. The early sunrise and sunset mean the start time is set for 9 AM, with Tea scheduled before Lunch to maximize playtime. Despite these unusual arrangements, the series’ significance remains the central focus.
South Africa, riding on the confidence from a victory in Kolkata, stands on the brink of a historic Test series win in India, which would be their first in over 25 years. For India, any misstep in Guwahati could lead to their second home Test series defeat in just over a year, an outcome that seemed unlikely given India’s recent home dominance.
Adding to the challenge for India is the unfamiliarity with the Guwahati conditions, which are as new to them as they are to South Africa. Mohammed Siraj is the only player in the current Indian squad who has previously played a First-Class match at this venue.
On the injury front, India will miss skipper Shubman Gill due to a neck spasm. The team management remains tight-lipped about his replacement, but Rishabh Pant will assume captaincy, becoming only the second Indian wicketkeeper to do so in Tests after MS Dhoni.
The visiting team has one change dilemma, potentially substituting Lungi Ngidi to strengthen their pace attack. During a press conference, Pant did not reveal much about the team’s lineup, but insights from a practice session hint at possible changes. KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal were observed practicing, while B Sai Sudharsan was seen performing his pre-match ritual.
Pant acknowledged the challenge of an overabundance of left-handers in the lineup, which proved advantageous for South Africa’s off-spinner Simon Harmer in Kolkata. If Sudharsan joins the lineup, right-handed all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy might also feature, possibly in place of left-handed Axar Patel.
On the South African side, Kagiso Rabada remains sidelined due to a rib injury, so Lungi Ngidi might be considered to bolster their bowling attack.
The pitch in Guwahati is less controversial compared to Eden Gardens and features a red-soil base with some grass, suggesting a match that could last at least four days. Both captains, Temba Bavuma and Pant, expect runs in the opening two days before spin becomes more influential.
The early start will likely make the first hour of each day a crucial period, favoring pace bowlers. The series promises a balanced contest among pacers, spinners, and batsmen. On this unexplored terrain and under unique conditions, the Test series is poised for an intriguing climax.
