Jammu and Kashmir’s Sunil Kumar Strikes Gold with Steadfast Bowling Against Hyderabad
For four years, Sunil Kumar patiently and quietly awaited his opportunity. The 27-year-old left-arm pacer from Akhnoor, Jammu & Kashmir, was originally identified in 2021 by the team’s head coach, Ajay Sharma. Despite this early recognition, First-Class cricket opportunities were scarce.
During this period, Sunil dedicated himself to training, traveling, and observing from the sidelines, absorbing every lesson from his coaches and seniors. His dedication finally bore fruit on a memorable Monday at the J&K Sports Hostel and Science College ground.
Sunil dismantled the Hyderabad batting lineup to achieve his first-ever five-wicket haul, a testament to his skill and years of hard work.
In an exclusive interview with Sportstar, a visibly emotional Sunil expressed his elation. “I’m extremely happy and somewhat emotional. This is my first fifer, and it’s something I will always cherish,” he shared.
Reflecting on his approach, he said, “The plan was straightforward—stick to the basics and maintain a consistent line and length. The pitch favored pacers, so I concentrated on hitting the right areas. After my fourth wicket, I felt a fifer was within reach.”
Sunil attributed part of his success to Krishna Kumar, the bowling coach, for adjusting his wrist position to enhance both in-swing and out-swing deliveries. “This small change made a significant impact,” he noted.
He also expressed gratitude to head coach Ajay, who was the first to recognize his potential. “Working with Ajay sir and the other coaches has been an invaluable experience. I’ve learned something new every day,” he remarked.
