Smaran: The Game-Changing Impact of Karun Nair on Our Team
R. Smaran from Karnataka, who notched an impressive unbeaten 227—his second double century of this Ranji Trophy season—against Chandigarh in Hubballi on Monday, remarked that batting alongside Karun Nair is “very easy.” He attributes this to the India international’s continual guidance.
The duo shared a 343-run partnership in Karnataka’s decisive innings triumph over Kerala and built a 119-run stand against Chandigarh on Sunday.
“He consistently advises me based on the condition of the wicket. He points out which shots carry risks on specific pitches. When facing two spinners, he exerts immense pressure on them, which forces the field to spread, allowing us to focus on rotating the strike and playing through the sessions. It’s truly a blessing to have him on our team. His presence in the middle simplifies things for us,” Smaran explained.

Discussing his pre-season preparation, Smaran said, “Winning the Ranji Trophy has always been a priority for me, especially since we haven’t secured a victory in ten years. Therefore, there was a concentrated effort on preparing for the red-ball season, with a focus on turning starts into substantial scores. I collaborated with my coach, Syed Zabiullah, to aim at extending the game and batting through the sessions.”
Reflecting on his successful season thus far, he stated, “It’s just the beginning, and I believe there is still a long journey ahead. You must keep accumulating runs and remain vigilant throughout.”
