James Anderson Commits to Lancashire for Another Year in County and T20 Cricket Action

James Anderson has extended his playing career by signing a new one-year contract with Lancashire, allowing England’s most successful bowler to continue participating in First-Class cricket past his 44th birthday.

Last year, Anderson was gently nudged towards retirement from England’s national team as the selection committee aimed to revamp the squad ahead of the Ashes series in Australia.

The seasoned bowler has signed a 12-month extension to remain with Lancashire for the 2025 season. The team plays at Old Trafford, a stadium that shares its name with the nearby Manchester United football ground, and where the Pavilion End is named the ‘James Anderson End’ in his honor.

In the recent season of the County Championship, Anderson secured 17 wickets in six matches and displayed formidable skills in the Blast, marking his return to T20 cricket after a decade. His performance earned him a spot in the Hundred for Manchester Originals.

Known for his prowess as a swing bowler, Anderson has pledged to continue playing in both the County Championship and T20 Blast into 2026, thus extending his professional cricket career to nearly 25 years.

Reflecting on his enduring career, Anderson, who holds the record for the most wickets by a fast bowler in Test cricket with 704 dismissals, remarked, “I’ve really enjoyed my cricket this year and still feel like I’ve got plenty to offer. I’m as hungry as ever to perform and contribute to the team’s success across both red- and white-ball cricket.”

Only spinners Muttiah Muralitharan of Sri Lanka and Shane Warne of Australia have surpassed Anderson’s Test wicket tally. Anderson also had a brief stint as a coaching consultant with England in 2025 before resuming his playing duties at Lancashire.
