Conrad Declares South Africa Primed for Landmark Test Against India

Flintoff Bids Farewell to Northern Superchargers Over Unrecognized Contributions

South Africa, despite being the reigning World Test Champions, faces a formidable challenge in the upcoming two-Test series in India, acknowledged head coach Shukri Conrad. Speaking on Wednesday at Eden Gardens, he described it as “the biggest challenge.”

“India presents a tough challenge anywhere globally, and playing at a legendary venue like Eden Gardens intensifies that,” said Conrad ahead of the opening Test on Friday. “I don’t believe we’ve faced a bigger challenge. Yes, we had the [WTC] final against Australia, which we won, marking a significant achievement. I equate this series and this match to that final. That’s the level of importance it holds for us.”

However, South Africa seems well-equipped with a strong bowling lineup for this rigorous tour. The pace attack, featuring Kagiso Rabada and Marco Jansen, alongside a spin bowling unit led by Keshav Maharaj, is formidable.

“With spinners like Keshav, Simon [Harmer], and Sen [Senuran Muthusamy], we’re confident in our ability to challenge India,” Conrad remarked.

“Historically, Eden Gardens has offered something for fast bowlers. I anticipate that pacers on both teams will be influential, especially during the initial days, with spin playing a role later. There are numerous battles within the Test match, amidst this larger contest.”

Additionally, the 58-year-old expressed relief over the return of leader Temba Bavuma following a two-month injury hiatus. The captain recently played for South Africa-A against India-A in Bengaluru, scoring a half-century in a successful run chase of 417.

“He’s been among the world’s best players. The composure he brings to the batting lineup, his leadership, and his calm demeanor provide us with a great deal of confidence. We’re delighted he performed well in the A game.”
