From Bus Floor to Cricket Star: Abhirath Reddy’s Inspiring Journey to Ranji Fame
Hyderabad climbed to the top of the Ranji Trophy Elite Group D table with a victory over Himachal Pradesh. The win was particularly gratifying, given the challenges faced by the team en route to Nadaun.
Runway repairs at Chandigarh airport forced the Hyderabad team to endure a 22-hour journey divided into three segments after their match in Pondicherry.
“It was a long and exhausting journey. Pondicherry was humid, and we fielded toward the end. We were very exhausted,” Hyderabad’s head coach D.B. Ravi Teja shared with Sportstar.
Additional obstacles emerged upon arrival.
“We couldn’t have a proper training session since our kit bags, usually sent by cargo, were delayed. We assessed the wicket, adapted to the conditions, had a brief recovery session, played a small game, and returned,” he added.
Despite these hurdles, Hyderabad remained focused and, with Abhirath Reddy scoring an unbeaten 175, defeated Himachal Pradesh by four wickets.
“We traveled on a semi-sleeper bus, arriving in Nadaun at 5 AM. I slept on the floor between the seats, which I found more comfortable,” Abhirath recalled, discussing his innings.
As the final day began, the team aimed to capitalize on any potential swing in the morning before tackling the spinners, playing with a winning mentality.
Abhirath credited Rahul Radesh for their 145-run partnership, which was pivotal for the win. “Rahul’s stability as a Test batter allows you to play your attacking game. We’ve been in good spirits throughout, aiming to maximize this consistent squad,” he mentioned.
Ravi Teja appreciated the consistent squad selection over recent years, advocating for player stability to enhance team performance.
Abhirath expressed relief and redemption following his match-winning knock. After tearing his hamstring earlier this year, he underwent rigorous rehabilitation to return in time for the Ranji campaign.
Reflecting on his earlier dropped catch that proved costly, Abhirath drew inspiration from Mohammed Siraj’s similar experience, determined to make things right for his team.
While Hyderabad sits atop the table, coach Ravi Teja acknowledged areas for improvement, particularly among the pacers, stressing the need for discipline and reliance on their strengths.
Ravi Teja emphasized the team’s unity and tenacity, recalling their positive mindset during a challenging match against Delhi.
Hyderabad is set to face Rajasthan at home on November 8, with a more comfortable journey anticipated. “Tomorrow, we embark on another long journey, but it’ll be easier this time as we’re flying to Dharamsala, then to Delhi, and from there to Hyderabad.”
