Embracing Losses, Eyeing Victory: Skipper Harmanpreet Before India vs South Africa Final
Harmanpreet Kaur prefers a relaxed approach during training sessions before a match, and the final of the Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 against South Africa was no exception. A broadcast team member noticed the Indian captain wasn’t batting and asked, “Not batting today?”
“Kal karungi (I will, tomorrow),” she replied with a composed assurance.
At 36, Kaur, instrumental in India’s journey to the 2017 final, now leads the team into the final of a home World Cup, her first as captain in a 50-over tournament.
Her fiery persona is well-known, fueling performances like her unbeaten 171 against Australia in the Derby semifinal eight years ago. Once again, India bested Australia, with Kaur adding 89 crucial runs in what became the highest run-chase in women’s ODIs. However, it was the team’s raw emotions and tears that captured public attention.
Reflecting on the victory, Kaur said, “I’m very emotional and often the first to cry, whether in defeat or victory. Moments like these matter. Beating Australia, a consistently strong team, required significant mental fortitude.”
She added, “Clearing that hurdle was special for all of us. I tell my team it’s okay to express their emotions. If you feel like crying, do it. We know the feeling of loss, but we are eager to experience the joy of winning. We hope tomorrow will be special for us.”
India’s path to the final was challenging, with losses against all three other semifinalists in the league stage. Kaur emphasized the team’s focus on maintaining the bigger picture despite setbacks.
“Even after three significant losses, the team stayed grounded. We reminded ourselves it’s a long journey with ups and downs. Success requires resilience,” she explained. “While we analyzed our shortcomings, we stayed united, with a clear goal in mind, supporting each other.”
