India Coach Gambhir Stands Firm Behind Struggling T20 Leader Suryakumar Yadav
India’s head coach, Gautam Gambhir, expressed confidence in T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav despite his recent batting slump as India prepares for a five-match series against Australia. Yadav, who led India to victory in the Asia Cup, has only scored 72 runs in his last seven innings. However, Gambhir remains unfazed, attributing such fluctuations to India’s commitment to an aggressive playing style.
“Surya’s batting form isn’t a concern for me because we’ve adopted an ultra-aggressive approach in our team. Embracing this philosophy means that failures are part of the journey,” Gambhir told JioHotstar. He explained that even though Yadav could easily score “40 runs off 30 balls” to deflect criticism, the team accepts failures as part of pursuing this dynamic strategy.
Gambhir praised Yadav’s alignment with T20 cricket’s core values of freedom and expression, highlighting that his vibrant personality off the field influences a positive team atmosphere. “From the outset, we agreed to play without fear of losing. My goal is not to be the most successful coach, but to lead the most fearless team,” Gambhir stated.
He reiterated India’s dedication to an aggressive style in T20s, focusing on the overall impact rather than individual scores. “While this approach might lead to more frequent failures, the emphasis is on our unique brand of cricket,” he added.
Acknowledging the risk of failure inherent in this strategy, Gambhir urged his players to remain resilient. “In crucial matches like the Asia Cup final, I reassured them that mistakes are part of the game and that only our dressing room’s opinion matters,” he explained. Gambhir and Yadav agree on the importance of playing without fear, noting that a conservative approach benefits the opposition. With India’s talent pool, Gambhir believes that embracing a fearless mindset will prove successful.
