Rahane Advocates for Experienced Players in India’s Aussie Campaign
Ajinkya Rahane has been out of the national cricket team for over two years, yet the seasoned batsman remains determined. He continues to lead Mumbai’s batting lineup in domestic competitions. Recently, Rahane hit another century against Chhattisgarh but celebrated quietly, simply raising his bat and giving a thumbs-up to his team. He explained this calm reaction, stating that his focus is on his game, not external opinions.
“Something clicked for me,” Rahane said on Sunday. “I understand my capabilities as a player and prefer not to pay attention to outside noise. There are many who speak without knowing what it means to play consistently with a positive mindset and strong intensity.”
Throughout his career, Rahane has prioritized Mumbai. This season, even after stepping down as captain, he has been a mentor to younger teammates. “I want Mumbai’s players to advance to the highest levels, despite what some might say about it. Many don’t realize the demands on an international cricketer who’s played for years. My family’s unwavering support, especially from my kids, keeps me grounded.”
Although Rahane last donned the Indian team jersey in the 2023 World Test Championship final, subsequent team management opted to move past him and Cheteshwar Pujara. “After so much cricket, when experienced players like me are dropped without communication, it feels unusual,” shared Rahane. “I believe players with experience should have more chances when returning, but communication was lacking.”
Despite absence from national selection, Rahane remains dedicated. “I enjoy my game, focusing on what I can control. Whether I’m selected is their decision, but I felt ready when the team needed me in Australia,” he said.
Australia’s recent series victory over India marked the final Test for Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Ajit Agarkar’s selection panel leans towards younger talent, but Rahane argues that age shouldn’t be the sole criterion. “Age is just a number. Performance and passion matter more. Experience in red-ball cricket is invaluable,” he explained, citing examples like Michael Hussey’s late debut.
As India faced Australia in an ODI, where Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli impressed with their performances, Rahane reiterated his commitment to playing all formats. “Having seasoned players like Rohit and Virat is critical. Experience, especially in red-ball cricket, is irreplaceable,” he added.
Turning to his Mumbai teammate Sarfaraz Khan, Rahane offered support amidst Khan’s recent challenges stemming from injury and exclusion from the India-A squad. Rahane advised him to stay focused, ignore distractions, and continue his scoring form in domestic cricket. He emphasized Mumbai cricket’s support for Khan, encouraging patience and focus on the elements within control.
