Smriti Pratika’s Brilliance Propels India to 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup Semifinals

Smriti Pratika Shines as India Clinches Semifinal Spot in 2025 Women's ODI World Cup

India couldn’t have imagined a better way to make it to the semifinals of the Women’s ODI World Cup. After facing the pressure from three consecutive losses, the team’s return to the cherished D.Y. Patil Stadium was welcomed by over 25,000 fans who ignored the rain to support the Women in Blue.

On Thursday, India secured a 53-run victory over New Zealand using the DLS method, marking their first semifinal appearance in eight years. This triumph was highlighted by centuries from openers Pratika Rawal and Smriti Mandhana, who propelled India to a commanding total of 340 for three in 49 overs.

Pratika’s recent performances had drawn scrutiny over her strike rate, but she proved her worth when it counted most. Facing a batting-friendly pitch, Smriti (109 off 95 balls, 10 fours, 4 sixes) and Pratika (122 off 134 balls, 13 fours, 2 sixes) forged a record-breaking 212-run partnership, the highest for India in World Cup history.

The New Zealand bowlers struggled to make an impact as Smriti and Pratika took control after a cautious start. Pratika achieved a significant milestone by becoming the joint-fastest player to reach 1,000 runs in women’s ODIs, tying with Australia’s Lindsay Reeler by accomplishing the feat in just 23 innings.

Kranti Gaud and Renuka Thakur provided an early breakthrough, causing the White Ferns to falter as key players couldn’t capitalize on their starts. Smriti’s confidence surged, culminating in her 17th international century, while Pratika improved her pace to bring up her second ODI century.

Following Smriti’s dismissal by Suzie Bates, promoting Jemimah Rodrigues (76 not out off 55 balls, 11 fours) to No. 3 was a strategic move. She partnered with Pratika to add 76 runs, ensuring stability in the innings.

Rain interruptions led to New Zealand’s target being adjusted to 325 in 44 overs. However, with top-order players struggling to build momentum, their chase fell short. Despite fifties from Brooke Halliday and Isabella Gaze, the Kiwis’ journey ended there.
